Hotel Closure for Renovation and 30 Year Anniversary Grand Reopening:

When Hotel Nikko San Francisco opened in 1987 it represented the most advanced technological and architectural Hotel design available at the time and with that same goal in mind, Takenaka Corporation will be closing the Hotel for the first time in its 30 year history in order to complete a $60 Million renovation creating completely reimagined experiences for Hotel Nikko San Francisco's guests.
The decision to completely close the hotel was made so that the work could be completed in the most efficient way possible; to that end, the Hotel will be closed December 19, 2016 through March 20, 2017 and during that time the Hotel will be occupied by multiple contractors, working three shifts per day. Spearheaded by Hirsch Bedner Associates the renovation will encompass 405 guestrooms, a seismic upgrade, the lobby, public spaces, third floor ballroom and pre-function space, as well as a significant upgrade to the technology and infrastructure of the hotel. As one of only five hotels in San Francisco to be recognized as a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotel, Hotel Nikko San Francisco will emerge from the renovation to create a completely reimagined and elevated hotel guest experience.

"When Hotel Nikko San Francisco opened in 1987 it represented the most advanced technological and architectural hotel design available at the time," said Anna Marie Presutti, vice president and general manager of Hotel Nikko San Francisco. "With the same focus in mind, the renovation will usher in upgraded amenities and a refreshed hotel experience with the same genuine and authentic service the Nikko has long been known for."

Under the continued ownership and leadership of the Takenaka Corporation, the decision to completely close the hotel was made so that the work could be executed in the most efficient way possible, without disrupting any guests. Multiple contractors will work to ensure the renovation is completed and the hotel's reopening remains on-schedule.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco's Inspired Re-Design

Hotel Nikko San Francisco has always embodied a modern Asian-inspired aesthetic taking a nod from its Japanese heritage, while constantly evolving to provide its guests accommodations that service the needs of today's travelers. In February 2016, the renovated Indoor Pool with Glass Atrium and adjoining Outdoor Terrace reopened which also included an updated outdoor dog run on the hotel's fifth floor, making the hotel one of the most pet-friendly properties in downtown San Francisco.

To usher in Hotel Nikko's 30th anniversary, the hotel enlisted Hirsch Bedner Associates to redesign guest rooms, lobby and reception areas, ballroom meeting and pre-function space, introducing a sophisticated and contemporary design that took inspiration from the fluid lines of a traditional kimono, and the movement and brushstrokes of Japanese calligraphy.

Guestrooms

The guestroom redesign will offer guests an urban refuge creating a home away from home at The Nikko in the heart of San Francisco. Guest rooms are residentially styled, filled with light and richly textured using an understated color palate of cool tones and vibrant touches of colors to welcome guests as they transition to their rooms. Living spaces embody the core of the guest room experience allowing guests to feel at ease with deep seated sofas, soft fabrics and organic light fixtures. Marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and oversized showers create a further retreat for guests.

Pre-Function Event Space

Setting the stage for the grandeur of the ballroom, the pre function area will be accented with textural lighting elements and bold colorful carpet design. Brightening the space with added lighting will activate the energy of groups of meetings. The pre function space will be elevated with artistic airy light fixtures that mimic the geometry of branches overlapping. This fixture ties the geometry of the screen panels to the natural water inspired carpet design tying the concept of natural organic elements with tailored designs.

Ballroom

Organic sculptural lighting fixtures are the focal point in the dramatic ballroom. Wall screens accent the room to add a contemporary element and emphasize the height of the space and add to the grandeur of the ballroom. Smaller accents of beaded elements add a hint of texture and shimmer onto the wall surface. The design of the bold carpet pulls in the patterns and color direction from adjacent public areas to keep the fluidity of the design language throughout the property.

In addition to the dramatic new look, March 2017 will also see the re-opening of California-inspired Japanese cuisine at Restaurant ANZU. Additional amenities include a 10,000 square foot Club Nikko fitness center with indoor pools, steam rooms and dry saunas. Live entertainment at the intimate Feinstein's at the Nikko nightclub will reinitiate immediately follow the hotel's reopening.

History

Hotel Nikko San Francisco was built and is owned by the Takenaka Corporation, a 23rd generation construction company in Japan. When the Takenaka Corporation built Hotel Nikko San Francisco in 1987 they chose to partner with Nikko Hotels International, their preferred management company at the time and now, almost 30 years later, the building is still owned by Takenaka Corporation and managed by Nikko Hotels International, quite the anomaly in today's world of nonstop Hotel consolidation and transactions.
